HOW OUR REHEARSALS WORK

Welcome to choir without the boring bits! Some Voices makes singing fun and easy for everyone. That’s why we don’t use sheet music, there’s no audition and you don’t need any singing experience to join.

WHAT IS A SOME VOICES REHEARSAL LIKE?

Some Voices rehearsals are very relaxed and friendly. You start with a warm up for the body and voice, which helps everyone feel energised and ready.

In a Some Voices rehearsal, you learn everything by ear. Before you arrive, you’ll have access to an online folder containing lyrics and recordings of your part. In the session, the choir leader will teach you the song and you simply listen and repeat. You will choose one of three voice parts to sing (see below) and join a friendly group who are all learning and singing the same thing as you.

There is strength in numbers! Even if you are not a confident singer, as part of a group you can feel free to sing out and not worry about how you sound. We will never ask you to sing on your own (unless of course you want to!) and one of our favourite sayings is ‘Strong and Wrong’!

After rehearsals, there are often drinks in a nearby pub and we also arrange lots of social occasions so you can get to know your fellow choir mates. Many of our members have made lifelong friends through Some Voices.

I love singing with everyone in Some Voices, it makes me happy.
I’ve made so many friends and had such wonderful experiences.

HOW DO I LEARN BY EAR?

Learning by ear is the most intuitive way to learn songs - after all, it’s how we learn nursery rhymes as children. Our experienced choir leaders break the song down into simple lines that you listen to and repeat over and over to make it stick in the mind. You gradually build up the song line by line.

We teach a new song every week and your rehearsal will be focused on learning the key sections and putting the voice parts together so you know how it will sound.

Then you will practice at home with your audio parts to complete and polish the song - click here to find out how.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH PART TO SING?

Our choir is divided into voice parts which sing different notes and sections to build up the arrangement and harmonies.

  • Soprano - the highest voices. In some songs, we split into Soprano Ones and Twos, with Ones singing higher.

  • Alto - the middle voices. Our Altos are usually divided into Alto Ones and Twos, with Twos singing slightly lower notes.

  • Tenor - the lowest voices. We don’t split our Tenor part.

If you aren’t sure which suits you, your leader will encourage you to try one part but you can change at any time until you feel comfortable.
